The automotive industry, and in particular the production of components for the automotive industry, is one of the most demanding sectors of the global market, with the different companies needing to continuously be evolving and quickly adapt themselves. The response capacity and flexibility of companies represent a key factor for their success. Through the last decades, a growing concern with the creation of a mentality of excellence and vision of continuous improvement, with actuation on the optimization of equipment, processes, tools and people skills, has expressed its efforts in terms of cost reduction and increased competitiveness. This dissertation was developed during an internship period, in an industrial context, carried out in the company Fico Cables, producer of components as metallic cables and comfort systems for the automotive industry. This work was incorporated in the Production and Continuous Improvement departments. The developed work focused on the optimization of a specific assembly line, with the support of various tools included in the Lean Thinking and Lean Manufacturing concepts, with the identification and elimination of different types of wastes (mudas) and the balancing of operations between the different workstations in order to increase the global efficiency and productivity. A f Through the application of a different methodology, as Six Sigma, it was carried out a different improvement project with the aim to reduce the quantity of scrap on the most critical sector of Fico Cables, and the achievement of a better comprehension of the flows, process characteristics and different variables associated to the scrap production. In every company, having information by itself is not advantageous if it is not properly handled and filtered in order to direct efforts towards the real and most critical problems. In this way, it was also part of the developed work, the implementation and improvement of a problemsolving A3 methodology to manage different production-related Key Performance Indicators (KPI), with the adequate stratification of information, improvement actions plan and validation of results. The realization of these improvement projects allowed the company to achieve relevant productivity gains on the assembly line, a solid path to achieve the purposed goals on the diminution of the quantity of scrap and a better management of KPIs information.
Numerical simulation of 3D fluid-structure interaction in floating wave energy converter devices
Global energy consumption and, consequently, energy related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
have been increasing in the last few decades. Currently, the large majority of
countries cover most of their energy needs with fossil fuels, contributing for CO2 emissions
to the atmosphere, which have a strong impact on global warming. Recently, there
has been growing concern about the significant increase in energy demands and environmental
pollutants emissions by worldwide governments and organizations, resulting
in the implementation of policies that promote the investment in non-polluting natural
resources.
The need to diversify the available renewable energy sources intensified the interest
in ocean renewable energy. Research and development (R&D) of devices capable of
extracting energy from the oceans (waves, wind, currents, tides) and transform it into
electrical energy has, therefore, been one of the main focus of ocean engineering in recent
years. Wave energy technology is not recent but, as opposed to wind and solar energy, it
is still lacking a design convergence, contributing for a higher levelized cost of energy
(LCOE), when compared to other sources. Wave energy technology has a strong potential
of development and may have a fundamental contribution on achieving carbon neutrality
and satisfying the increasing global energy demand.
One of the main challenges of offshore renewable energies is to reduce costs, common
to both wave and wind energy. Consequently, the incentive to couple semisubmersible
platforms (SSPs), for the support of offshore wind turbines, and wave energy converters
(WECs) emerges, allowing the reduction of installation costs. Although there are
many advantages, the coupling of WECs with offshore wind turbines also introduces the
influence of the interaction between both, resulting in a complex hydrodynamic system.
Therefore, this work consists in studying a WEC which can be coupled with a floating
SSP. The study is performed using the OpenFOAM software, augmenting its functionalities
using olaFlow’s library for the generation and propagation of waves. In this context,
the objectives of this thesis are: i) validation of the numerical model using experimental
data from literature; ii) analysis of large amplitudes of motion effects of the device; iii)
study of regular wave interaction with the wave energy hyperbaric converter (WEHC) device; iv) study of irregular wave interaction with the WEHC device; and v) study of the
influence of the WEHC power take-off (PTO) damping characteristics.
In the first part of this study the validation of wave generation and propagation is
executed, comparing the wave parameters of simulated regular waves with analytical
values. After the validation, a mesh convergence study is done.
Afterwards, regular wave interaction with the WEC device is studied. First, a free
heave and pitch decay tests are carried out to calculate the WEC’s natural period. Then,
simulations without the PTO system are performed, enabling the characterization of the
WEC’s behaviour for the different maritime conditions considered. The obtained results
allow to conclude that the WEC is in resonance with the waves for frequencies around
0.20 Hz. It is also observed that both the heave amplitude and the pitch angle present
small variations for shorter period waves. The influence of the pitch angle on the WEC’s
heave amplitude is also studied.
After, simulations with the PTO system are carried out, with results about the extracted
power and optimal PTO’s linear damping coefficient being obtained. A power
curve in function of the PTO’s linear damping coefficient, for each case considered, is
presented.
Finally, irregular wave interaction with the WEC device is studied. The influence of
the PTO system when the WEC is under irregular waves is characterized.O consumo global de energia e, consequentemente, as emissões de CO2 derivadas da sua
impacto no aquecimento global.
A investigação e desenvolvimento
comparado a outras fontes.
o período natural do WEC.
A influência do

Communication has always been at the center of evolution and social development. Their various forms of expression allowed to adjust and improve the details which in turn improved the clarity and effectiveness of the message in its transmission. Some new media emerged, and other media evolved. Considering that drawing and writing are some of the most relevant forms
of communication in this study, their course is led to a form of communication that fuses these characteristic practices. In this document, a project is developed with progression
analysis, following the steps that the author has marked since briefing to the final result. The interest in lettering, its relevance to the author and to the project in question are addressed. Examples are given from other themes and other countries whose practice of this form of communication is preponderant and effective in transmitting the content to their own public. Nationally, are denoted references that follow similar moves and concers as international cases in the same forum. The motivation and the personal impetus for the focus of action
are also included, both in their nature as an academic interest and in their sporting and collaborative interest. The Clube do Povo de Esgueira, a group that sports basketball, and because it is the club of the parish where the author is from and because it is sport of election of the author as well, soon became part of his life and the objective of contributing for the club grew.
This partnership originated a briefing, in result of a need - to create new merchandising elements that would improve the visibility of the club, attract more fans and assist in the financial
strengthening of the institution. The design phase that includes genesis and the line of reasoning for the design of lettering is described. Not only the steps throughout the entire project but also the issues that influence and affect the direction of progress. The hurdles and restrictions that have arisen are aggregated with some contemplated solutions, as well as the premises and conditions for the decisions that were taken. It also includes a description of the process of digitizing and vector conversion of the drawing accompanied by a personal
opinion of good practices that illustrates the author's point of view with regard to digital execution for simple, controlled and precision control. Finally, the final product projections are presented in the form of mockups that demonstrate design alternatives, along with explanations of the paths taken and their technical difficulties of production. It should be noted that these findings are a result of the author's professional experience as a technical collaborator in a screen printing and advertising company
MyHealthyTrack - Recomendação de rotas saudáveis
Tese de Mestrado, Engenharia Informática, 2023, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de CiênciasCurrent route recommendation systems, such as Google Maps and Waze, prioritize recommending shorter, faster or more economical routes, considering the means of transport. However,
there are some gaps that resurface. Which leads to the consideration of some additional criteria.
Systems that adopt “crowd voting” seek to improve the competitiveness and performance of
objects or services through community evaluation. Continuous evaluations allow us to improve
recommendations by learning from user preferences.
The objective of this project was to develop a new version of the MyHealthyTrack system,
incorporating new functionalities and a renewed graphical interface. This update includes the integration of crucial information into the PostgreSQL database, such as data on new roads and cycle
paths in Lisbon, as well as quality criteria related to noise levels and street lighting. Furthermore,
the area covered by the system was significantly expanded, now covering the entire city of Lisbon. The new route evaluation system allows data to be updated after evaluating a specific route,
changing the data only for the route chosen by the user, and the system is able to recognize when
the user reaches the destination.
MyHealthyTrack is a mobile application developed specifically for the Android operating system. This application allows users to enter departure and arrival points, whilst also being able to
customize their preferences in relation to five different quality criteria. Furthermore, the application offers users the option to choose between six different types of routes. This system integrates
several modules to offer a personalized experience to users.
A user study validated the effectiveness of route recommendations and the usability of the
MyHealthyTrack application, reinforcing the proposed approach
rural profundo no mapa’.
ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with the topic of participative strategies for sustainable development in low density rural areas (Baptista, 2006). These areas represent more than a half of the Continental Portuguese territory and they have been forgotten and marginalized (almost removed ‘from the map’) in the ambit of the globalised society.
The thesis has as main argument that adequate communication strategies will help to put rural areas on the map again, making them better places to live in and at the same time promoting local communities’ participation. This means that communication could represent a powerful tool to rural areas’ sustainability.
The first of the 4 main parts deals with the transformations on rural areas, in which multifunctionality, environmental issues and the social valorization of natural resources are fundamental topics. On the second part we aim to
debate the operationalization and application of sustainable development concept in the rural areas’ context, through local products quality, natural
resources’ valorization and diversification of functions; as well as through local communities’ participation and empowerment. Another important aspect is the analysis of the cooperation networks that underlie ‘proximity’ approaches as
animation/mediation. On the third part of this thesis we debate the role of communication to rural development strategies, through the analysis of the
processes of education and communication and through the identification of the needs of the more common rural consumers: the urban dwellers. The fourth part is devoted to the analysis of the two case studies considered on this thesis: the ‘Cooperativa Mais Além’ and the ‘Criar Raízes’ project. On this part we also present the main hypotheses and the methodology followed, including the procedures of construction and application of the interviews and questionnaires. The field work included interviews to the presidents of ‘Juntas de Freguesia’ (presidents of the parishes) and animators of the two projects mentioned, as well as questionnaires to a quota sample of the inhabitants of six communities, located on the Natura Network Site ‘Serras da Freita e Arada’.
The empirical evidence collected conducted to some important conclusions, such as the contribution of the animation/mediation processes to local populations’ involvement in the local development strategies and actions; in fact external communication processes could foster social change, transforming rural areas as consumption places. Based on the empirical evidence analysed we proposed that rural sustainable development could be operationalized through animation/mediation processes, using a researchaction methodology. These processes could contribute to put rural remote areas ‘back in the map’. For that we suggest an three phase intervention, being the first one animation (which conducts to social change), a second one an
intermediate step in the local communities adaptation to the modern society’ demands and the final one the rural sustainability phase
An architecture for collaborative data mining
Collaborative Data Mining (CDM) develops techniques to solve complex problems of data analysis requiring sets of experts in different domains that may be geographically separate. An important issue in CDM is the sharing of experience among the different experts. In this paper we report on a framework that enables users with different expertise to perform data analysis activities and profit, in a collaborative fashion, from expertise and results of other researchers. The collaborative process is supported by web services that seek for relevant knowledge available among the collaborative web sites. We have successfully designed and deployed a prototype for collaborative Data Mining in domains of Molecular Biology and Chemoinformatics

Removal of Hydrophobic Organic Pollutants and Copper by Alginate-Based and Polycaprolactone Materials
Funding Information: This research was funded by the FUNDAÇÃO PARA A CIÊNCIA e TECNOLOGIA (FCT—Portugal), grant number PTDC/BIA-MIB/31864/2017 and by LA/P/0045/2020 (ALiCE), UIDB/50020/2020 and UIDP/50020/2020 (LSRE-LCM), funded by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) and by FEDER funding CENTRO-01-0246-FEDER-000044. Publisher Copyright: © 2022 by the authors.Organic pollutants (OPs) and heavy metals are environmental toxicants associated with great concerns. Decontamination processes are urgent for both, and the possibility to achieve their simultaneous removal from polluted waters is highly interesting. Additionally, in many cases, the effect of organic matter in the removal process is overlooked and must be considered. This work aimed to study the potential of alginate-based and polycaprolactone (PCL) materials to remove OPs and copper ions in the absence and presence of organic matter. The OPs investigated were the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene, and the pesticide chlorpyrifos, both hydrophobic compounds. Copper (II) ions were used as a model of heavy metals. Alginate-based spheres were prepared by gelation, and PCL microparticles were obtained by oil/water emulsion solvent evaporation. The materials with the highest efficiencies for OP removal from aqueous solutions were those with activated carbon and PCL. Furthermore, the spheres with activated carbon could remove anthracene and copper simultaneously, even in the presence of humic acid. This work points to activated carbon–alginate spheres as a multifunctional adsorbent able to remove different pollutants and to PCL for potential applications in OP decontamination processes.publishersversionpublishe
Deliberative journalism and citizenship: principles and practices in the Portuguese regional press
What is the perception that journalists have about
the citizens' role in democratic life? What is the role of
journalists in relation to public sphere and political
debate? The main goal of this study is to investigate
the relationship between the local press, citizens and
civic practices. It takes as starting point a dual
theoretical approach, the theory of deliberative
democracy and the movement of public journalism, to
assess the scope of a conception of "deliberative
journalism."
Under the project "Citizens' Agenda: journalism
and political participation in the Portuguese media ",
a questionnaire was delivered to 45 journalists from
eight regional newspapers in Portugal. The results
show that although the journalists appreciate the
principles underlying the public and deliberative
journalism movements (which suggests that a
deliberative consciousness is emerging), also express
an conventional journalism approach
